Overview

Windows are almost always the weakest link in a building’s acoustic envelope. As cities grow denser and low-frequency sources such as rail, road and mechanical plant become more prevalent, conventional glazing struggles to deliver the comfort occupants expect. This piece looks at how combining measurement, simulation and material design into a single hybrid workflow lets us push insulation performance well beyond what any one method achieves alone.

The challenge

High-frequency sound is comparatively easy to attenuate: mass and sealing do most of the work. Low frequencies are the stubborn part. Below roughly 200 Hz, resonances in the glass, the cavity and the surrounding structure interact in ways that a single-number rating like Rw simply does not capture.

That gap between the rating and the lived experience is exactly where complaints originate. To close it, we needed a way to see the whole system — glass, cavity, frame and reveal — behaving together across the full spectrum.
